May Grades

 

Premier had more surprises than I expected in May. The top of the table has two clear cut favorites in Raiders and Sharpshooters and then the middle seems much more up in the air then expected. Both Bees and Chupacabras have thrown their names right into the playoff mix with Celtic and BUSS both looking maybe not as feared as before. Should make for a good playoff battle for the rest of the season. 

 

AC Elite - B

Only two games in for AC Elite but pretty straightforward results for them. For me it's more about what happening in the table around them that vaults them up the ladder. The middle class of Premier is a lot thicker than it appeared at start of the season.

Amherst Sharpshooters - B+

Probably a bit harsh to dock them this hard for a draw to Wolves but that's the standard they set for themselves. Clearly the biggest threat to take down Raiders.

BSC Raiders - A

Already have discarded two of their traditional rivals Raiders are just an absolute machine. I think I’ll have to look up the least goals given up in a season in modern BDSL history because that record is on watch with them playing this way.

Borussia Bees - C+

That opening season victory over Queenston musta been sweet and what i thought coulda been a spring board to a big month of May but that turned quickly after giving away a lead to Wolves and then falling to AC Elite. The loss of Jonah Fogel can’t mean the end of the year for a promising roster. Lets see if the Bees can get buzzing again here.

Buffalo United SS - C+

Inconsitantcy here out of BUSS but that has sorta become the MO of them in regular season play. I still feel that if they sort out their issues they are the 3rd best team in Premier but its up to them to reach that potential.

Celtic United - D

What a difference in a year. This time last year I was marveling at the offensive prowess of this squad and wondering if it was their breakthrough season. This year though. Aside from running it up on Roos late scoring has dried up. And sure they had some tough opening games but falling to Chupas will put them more in the race for 5th or 6th vs pushing for a bye like last year. Not a good opening month for Celtic.

Kilimanjaro Bandits - D-

Bandits are in tough. Reports seem to indicate that they are playing just fine but lacking a connection between the team. They’ll soon be able to focus on one competition and maybe that refocus can help them achieve better results.

Los Chupacabras - A

Honestly they are probably the story of the month of May in premier for me. Sure they are 2-2 but they have played nearly all the preseason favorites in the division so the upcoming schedule could get a little simpler. They had confidence in the roster from last year and that boost of familiarity seems to be paying off heavily for them. Always happy when I’m proven wrong.

Queenston FC - B-

Sure they slipped up to open the year vs Bees but since then they have righted the ship. I think they’ll continue to get consistent results especially if they are able to keep this scoring record going. A solid post season team here.

Roos FC - C

Roos have played all teams tough so far but right now can’t seem to close out games. June isn’t any easier for them either so if they are hoping to have any sort of midtable hopes they’ll need to do like Bees and Chupas and steal some points here from a team higher ranked than them

Wolves FC - B

Finding points in their last two games, Wolves are playing about where expected. Huge stealing a point from Amherst for them. But in terms of playoff ambitions, losing to Chupas might come back to bite them. Still they’ll be right back in the thick of it for the last playoff spots I think.

Championship

 

Championship on the other hand has gone more or less as expected vs my preseason predictions. I still would say the 6 teams I expected to make the playoffs before the season started will while that relegation race among the leftover teams will be extremely tight. In a strange way the 10 teams have made the races here between the two sides even tighter. 

 

Buffalo Italia FC - B

Italia recruited better than expected after the split off from last year. They have navigated a tricky opening schedule here to put them in good playoff positioning with the remaining slate of games. Confident they’ll be in the postseason at this point come years end instead of just missing like last year..

Buffalo Stallions FC - D

Stallions on the other hand have struggled here out of the gate. I think the learning curve or roster management and building is maybe apart of the struggle but they’ll eventually figure it out. Some self inflicted wounds in games with cards too. Some points lately though along with a nice win in Cup and maybe they’ll turn this thing around.

Crimson Fire FC - F

More like Crimson MISFire. Am I right? Woeful here out of the gate from Crimson. Honestly cant quite place my finger on what exactly the issue has been overall. Seems like each game has presented a different issue for them. While they do sit last as of this date, I’ll go down with the ship. They’ll right this thing and still make the playoffs.

Lykan United - C-

I don’t know with these guys. I predicted low and then they smashed Stallions out the gate. Since then it's more in line with what I expected. Again I’m not sure there is an urgency to perform well here.

Mes Que FC - C-

Tough loses to open the season but with their young talent becoming increasingly more available to play here as the season progresses I think they’ll be in far better shape as we continue. Somehow I’m higher on them then vs the start of the year.

NMB FC - A+

Led by a strong defensive unit this club is playing some solid soccer. One thing I believed they lacked last year was depth and this year I think their bench is proving to be much stronger. Very much looking forward to their game vs Polonia coming up at the end June.

Olean 1854 FC - B

Even at 2-1 this club is for me struggling more then I’d like. The fortress that is St. Bonaventure suffered a dent in reputation in Priemer and NMB has further knocked that down. Still that is their only loss in league play (fell to Italia in Cup too but not reading too much into that) so they are winning. A great win v Polonia but i suspect that maybe they weren’t at full strength. A playoff team but maybe not as good as I thought.

Polonia Legacy - A

Since falling to Olean in Week 1 Polonia have ran over their opponents in their last three games by a combined score of 17 to 2. I do want to see them continue this level of play vs some strong competition here and June brings that opportunity to them.

West Side FC - B

I think out of all the teams in the division no one neds their stars to perform more then West Side. And when they do they are easily one of the top teams in the division. When they don’t though they are pretty beatable. Luckily for them i think their stars will do the jump for them.

1st Division

 

I mean this division I have pretty much nailed so far outside of struggles of FC Quake. Main storyline here is who is the second best team because I don’t think anyone can touch FC Lackawanna. There are some good battles at the opposite end of the table here too among the winless teams as they fight to avoid the drop.

 

Buffalo Celtic - B-

Would you believe it if i told you that Buffalo Celtic is the team right now with the most success for the Celtic clubs this year. They only played in 3 games but a mere average record has this team mid table which is exactly where I assumed they would be. I expect playoffs but now one and done most likely.

Cheektowaga Stingrays FC - C+

I would like to rank the club higher after a good result vs Outlaws to end the month but I look at the remaining schedule here and they still have a lot of top clubs left here. If they want any hope of playoffs they must win their next two games to have a shot IMO. Not convinced enough that it will happen.

Clarence Coyotes - C

One of the 4 clubs here in D1 without a win yet the Yotes have done OK here. My concern here is that this run of games in June against the top of the table teams might torpedo confidence enough to push them out of the picture and have guys thinking other summer activities instead of games on Sunday. We’ll see.

Delco Academy - B

Somehow a 1-1-2 record is good enough for 5th in D1 which show the parity level here in the division. And even though Delco currently sits there I’m not sure they’ll end the season in this spot. If they could steal some points in the next two games that would go a long way. I just don’t envision it at this stage.

FC Lackawanna - A+

Honestly this club belongs in Champo already. Anything sort of a double if not the treble would be disappointing. All there is to say at this stage really.

FC Quake - D

One of the more disappointing clubs in the league this year. The usual solid defense has been leaky with no clean sheets this year has me worried. But perhaps a turnaround is coming? After dropping first two games, they were able to draw vs Badgers and Revs to end the month. In june they need two wins minimum to gave themselves a playoff look. I’m choosing for now to believe they’ll rally.

Honey Badgers - D

They are winless. They are also undefeated. Depends on how you want to look at it. This D really just stands for Draw because all the Badgers have been able to do. Their is good talent on this roster but they seem to just play ot the level of their opponents on any given game day so far. I think the race for 6th will come down to them FC Quake and Delco.

Niagara FC - A

Kinda a strange draw v Outlaws but it was week 1 so I’ll chalk it up to shaking the rust off. Since  then its been full steam ahead including a nice win over Rance FC. For me they are the most well rounded and experienced team in the division which should place them firmly in the playoffs and maybe the only team that could knock of FC Lackawanna. Looking forward to that tilt at the end of the month.

Outlaws - C

So back to back draws v solid teams to open the season made me think I overlooked Outlaws here but then they sorta collapsed the last two games to end May. Scoring woes continue for this club with last years leading scorer without a point so far. If they can’t fix that things won’t improve.

Rance FC - C-

Honestly a point disappointed here from the northtown club here. It seems like they are doing more to hold themselves back vs their opponents. I expected more from them. The good news here is that with only rivals FC Lackawanna on the schedule from the top clubs they have plenty of time and opportunities to clean things up and round into form before playoffs come.

Revolution SC - A

Revs continue to churn through teams and games without too much slowing them down. One of the most balanced teams in the league I would like to see some of their scorers round into form here as that seems like the only thing missing at the moment. Clearly one of top teams in D1. Looking forward to seeing them play Lackawanna at some point.

2nd Division

 

So far this season D2 has probably been the division with the most surprises. I think of all of my preseason predictions this division had the most misses. Westside Blitz look to maintain their hot start to the season. A few teams here are underachieving in my opinion but plenty of time left in the season to turn things around. Over a competitive group here that will have good battles at both ends of the table.

 

Buffalo Cosmos - B+

A tough loss to Lasalle to open the year but the Cosmos rebounded nicely including drawing rival Queen City Gunners. They lack an attacking punch here but have shown be be solid enough in the back to make up for it. Overall with how the rest of the division is shaping up I’m actually moving them into a playoff position after a strong May.

Celtic 1888 - F

This grade is also self requested. This roster on paper looks much more talented then the porous start here from 1888. They own the divisions worst goal differential which shows just how poor they have been. They have some upcoming games against teams in the middle of the pack that if they want any chance to change their standing they need 3 points in but it seems like at this stage they just aren’t up for it.

Celtic Brigade - B-

For me May went pretty well here for the Brigade if you consider preseason expectations. This team has some creative players on offense which has proven helpful because they pair that with the divisions worst defensive unit thus far. If they clean up the back end they could challenge of a low playoff seed. Earning at least 4 points this month would be needed to mount the challenge

Devils - C-

Out of all the clubs in D2 I’m most confused by the results from the preseason favorites. Whatever is happening this team is better then their 1-1-2 record here. Maybe the 4-0 win over 1888 to end May straightens them out. I still think they’ll be a title threat when they round into form but they might just have to do it from a 4 or 5 seed vs grabbing a bye.

Great White Buffalo - A

A dazzling start to the season for the Buffalos. This is a complete bounce back from where their season went in 2022. If you wanted to poke some holes though I could point out that they haven’t faced anyone of note in particular. The June schedule is much tougher and we’ll see if they can keep this pace up especially with their great defensive unit. They even secured a Twitter voting poll victory for the league.

Hamburg Monarchs SC - D

Not good here from the Monarchs. They have one of the worst offenses in the entire BDSL let alone D2. Tough times ahead for the red and white. I will say though, they might have a wildcard factor here in the Nike Base. If they grass remains as long as the pictures I saw where it could slow down enough teams and throw them off enough to grab some points.

Lasalle FC - B

Honestly this team and its identity remains elusive to me. They are just sorta OK here. Middle of the road good barometer team to determine where other teams might land on the ladder. Lasalle could be the perfect club for this litmus test.

Queen City Gunners - B-

Kinda harsh here to do this to a team with no losses but this grade is more about my expectations vs results. I know they probably hate that draw to Cosmos and then an even stranger one to Hamburg after that. That’s too much of a dip to give them a better grade. Love the game v Great White Buffalo to open June. They need to close games out and I still think they boast one of the best rosters in the division. I think they’ll rebound here and take the 1 seed.

Southern Tier FC - B+

I usually try to not judge too harshly on opening season surprise results because off all the variables and Southern Tier are a great example of this. They fell week one but have cruised since then in comfortable fashion even. The wins have come against the bottom of the division but they are comfortable enough to make me think they are legit one of the best squads in D2

United Warriors - F

About as bad a start to a season as it could be for the Warriors. The lone point off Lasalle is a far cry from what coulda been. Now they have had one of the hardest schedules to open the year so maybe as it eases up here they can get back into the playoff picture. There is still plenty of talent here that could do the job. They just need to sort themselves (and their tempers) out to get back on track

Westside Blitz - A+

Living up to their name the Blitz are pouring in the goals here to open the season. Ali Sheikh is unquestionably the player of the season in the division to far as team struggle to try to contain him. The competition improves some here with the upcoming schedule but they have done enough to earn the grade so far.

3rd Division

 

D3 has been closer then expected through the first month of the year. The preseason favorite has fallen and some clubs in the middle have made their moves up the ladder. All this chaos is great though as it will lead to a tight playoff race with nearly every team in the division at this stage.

 

Buffalo Brighten Stars FC - B+

Great start to the campaign from the Stars here. This club has been good not great over the past few season but so far May results have placed them as one of the best clubs in the division. I would say here though that the schedule has been rather kind and their first test vs a higher quality team in Ukraine they fell but I think they’ll bounce back. A playoff lock for me at this stage.

Buffalo Night - F+

Pretty piss poor. If it wasn’t for their solid results in Matthews Cup they’d probably get the F- but they are in good shape over there. It was a difficult opening month schedule wise for the new club so perhaps they are due for a turn around here as they get used to BDSL play. Right now I need to see it before I believe it.

JL Dutch - A-

I’m really actually disappointed in myself for ranking them low in my preseason predictions. This team has plenty of BDSL experience and know how to get results. That sort of ability shouldn’t be overlooked. The opening two games of June will really determine if Dutch are one of the top teams in the division or just a solid playoff threat. I’m now betting on the former instead of the latter.

LA United - A

I debated the A+ here for them but settled on A. The trickle down from FCY dropping out of the league has boosted this club just like FC Lackawanna is seeing. They played a tough May schedule here All their results have been close here but all going in their favor. LA United appear to be a legit threat to the top clubs in D3.

Lake Shore FC - B

Honestly these results are way too close to comfort for me especially when you look at the teams they are playing. I need to see some more comfortable results here from the Seabirds (this is now their team nickname regardless of what they say). Back to back tough games to open June for them after a bye. I still have them in the playoffs but trending down.

Medina Mustangs FC - C-

I just feel like whatever I think of this club they do the opposite. The roster talent is here so I remain bullish on them but based on how wrong I am on them constantly they probably aren’t happy that I haven’t lost faith. Looking at this June schedule they have a golden opportunity to right the ship here and reassert themselves as a promotion threat here in D3 but their is certainly more clubs fighting them for this.

Meerkats FC - F-

Look, I said I was retiring the Jimmy’s Kickball team nickname for them but these May results have me second guessing that. Really poor here from Meerkats. And the schedule looks like it's only going to get harder. I can’t see a way back for them after obviously way too lofty preseason predictions for them.

Moby Ducks FC - C

Really I think they’ve done well here in May despite the 1-3 record. Playing good teams very tight so probably better than most think here. They have maybe one of the hardest schedules in June though so they’ll need to keep looking at the positives and ignoring the results to secure no relegation.

Munster FC - C-

Again similar to Moby Ducks, good efforts here in each game but just coming up short every game. A big win vs the Reds though keeps them out of the relegation spot though and those 3 points might prove vital come the end of the season. Offensively they need more bite.

Ukraine - B+

Hey if you're a neutral soccer fan and are interested in watching wide open soccer games I suggest you attend a game here where Ukraine features. Their games seem like a lot of fun and right now they are getting on the right end of the results. The remaining schedule is extremely manageable too so for me this team is looking good for postseason play.

WNY United Reds - C

A totally average start to the year for the Reds have them on pace for a finish exactly where I thought they would be. I would point out here too that after this first game in June the remaining games left to be played are against my expected top 6 so they really need a result here v Buffalo Night to keep them in the middle instead of dropping down.

4th Division

 

Well I was hoping that we’d see a duplicate of last year in D4 where the teams were so evenly balanced nearly top to bottom. But this season it seems like the top two is so clear cut and the even 3 and 4 are also fairly obvious. After that it's pretty competitive but I don't think we’ll see the races pan out like it did last year.

 

Allen FC - B+

Actually pretty impressed with this first year BDSL club. The preseason rankings were very worrisome for this squad but a 2-2 opening to their existence is very encouraging. This team really needs to find some scoring to stay competitive. The defense has carried them while they have managed just 2 goals so far. All in all though Im happy to see they aren’t a repeat of Erie County FC.

Bangarang FC - A+

The Bang Gang are dropping the hammer on teams this year. Defensively Ryan Couell has made them one of the best units out there. They have a a solid trio of offensive weapons playing great right now. After years of close calls could this finally be the year Bangarang makes a final? Hard not to like them right now to do just that.

Big Green SC - C+

When they are good they are good. When they are bad they are bad. Big Green is the most Jeykell and Hyde team in the division to me. I think though there is enough top end talent on the roster that in the end will drag them into the postseason. The first two games of the month are extremely important to that coming true though.

Celtic Classic - F

I suppose here is a cautionary tale to all teams out there that want to discredit maybe the differences between the divisions of play here in BDSL. A majority of this squad was playing in D2 last year and they shuffled down to our D4 during the usual Celtic offseason shuffle. It even fooled me into thinking that experience would lead them to be the top team in D4. But here were are. Winless through June. The schedule was tough so maybe they can bounce back here but I’ll be skeptical of that now.

Fargo FC - D

This club has for me been one of my most disappointing teams. A good win to open the season was forgotten after a pair of damaging losses. Now the thought of a solid playoff spot for them seems hard to imagine. Instead they’ll be in the mix for the last playoff spots I think. Defensively they need to improve here. Schedule is about to get harder too.

Infinity FC - A+

Who will score on Infinity? Anyone? Looks like a tough ask for anyone right now. Coupling the perfect defensive record with a balanced scoring attack, Infinity is the second top team in a seeming two club race for the trophy. Fitting that it's against Bangarang.

North Collins United - F

Ugly ugly ugly. Only real way to describe the start for this first year BDSL club. Just 2 goals in for games match them with Allen FC for the worst offense in the division. The only positive to even pick at here is the Cup victory over Queen City AFC. Aside from that its just all gone wrong here. Definitely a miss here on the preseason predictions from me.

Queen City AFC - B-

This team has a good mix of veteran BDSLer’s with some quality talent sprinkled in. They’ll beat the bad teams and struggle against the good ones. Similar to Lasalle, like a good baseline team for average in the D4 ranks. But in this division that baseline is good enough for playoffs.

Rust Belt United - C+

They must really be cursing that Week 1 loss to South Buffalo and hoping that it doesn’t come back to bite them. For the 5 & 6 seeds its really seems to be a three team race between RBU, Big Green and Queen City. Right now RBU is the team I have on the outside looking in.

South Buffalo FC - D+

That opening week win was nice but things are Goin’ South (this is a joke that only people who are from South Buffalo like myself would get). June opens with a winnable game v Fargo but then its a tough schedule until July after that. They should aim to grab points this weekend because they might not have a chance again until next month.

Tonawanda United - B+

It’s nice to see this club finding success in this division after a few years struggling in high ones. It's a veteran team chock full of BDSL players that must be welcoming wins. Clearly they are the one of the only threats to either Bangarang & Infinity. Should be a fun year for them where they’ll make the playoffs and have a look at an upset later on.

nWo - B+

It’s nice to see this club finding success in this division after a few years struggling in high ones. It's a veteran team chock full of BDSL players that must be welcoming wins. Clearly they are the one of the only threats to either Bangarang & Infinity. Should be a fun year for them where they’ll make the playoffs and have a look at an upset later on…….damn I feel like I just typed this or something……must be going crazy or deja vu or something.

O-35 Division

 

First month through and most teams have only played teams in their own tier so far. Things in Tier B and Tier C have been pretty straight forward but Tier A seems to have some shuffling here.

Blue Stars FC - C

It seems like the defending champs are always a bit slow out of the gate and this year is no different. I think they’ll still make the playoffs and then at that stage it's anyone's game. They always seem to play their best then.

Not looking like the juggernaut from last season so far. Still probably the favorite after the first month of play but it looks more like the gap has closed to them then anything else.

Big start to the year for Oranje. Splitting with Blue Stars and setting up at worst the same with Enigma almost promises them a postseason spot at this early stage. Are they conjuring that 2021 magic again?

Well they have their games vs Enigma out of the way. Hard to be overly critical when they have only really played 2 teams. We’ll know more after they play more games in June.

While I expected them to be the top team in Tier B, I didn't expect it to be by this degree. No goals against and 11 for over the 3 games vs their group mates is impressive. I’m positive they’ll be looking forward to playing the A Tier teams coming up in June.

OLDevils FC - B+

Only two games in the books but a 4-1 win over GOATS makes me think they are probably the best team in Tier C in this small window.

C.S. Italia - B+

Also only 2 games but they only got a 2-1 win over GOATS so they stay in 2nd in my book.

Harsh because they had to play West United but they lost both games to their Tier C bretheran. I expect the games between Italia to be tight and OLDevils maybe not so much.
